Dorin Bu Ess

Modou Touré's Dorin Bu Ess is at time of review regrettably unreleased. Regrettably, as it is an excellent album. It was submitted by its producer, Enrico Dow, and it is very much to be hoped that it will see release soon, even if only in digital form initially.

Senegalese singer-songwriter Modou Touré is getting well known on the British 'world music' gig scene, and Dorin Bu Ess bears witness why. Regrettably, no further information regarding the material is available, i.e., whether this consists of originals or traditional songs in contemporary arrangements, although one suspects the former. In fact, no information whatsoever is available, not even regarding the musicians who took part in the recording.

This not withstanding, Dorin Bu Ess is a very enjoyable listen that is much in the contemporary Senegalese vein but at the same time bears the stamp of individuality. Touré has a superb voice that is compelling. If there is something to be faulted, it is, to begin with, the first twenty seconds of the Intro in particular being too low in gain with a too sudden transition that makes you hastily reach for the volume control. Overall, there is a certain unevenness in the gain throughout the album. However, this should not detract too much from what is otherwise an excellent album.

The songs are fairly consistent throughout, and Dorin Bu Ess is certainly compelling enough to want to start playing the album again as soon as it finishes.

On the whole, I am so impressed with Modou Touré's Dorin Bu Ess that I can only urge Touré most strongly to release this album as soon as possible.
