The Vinyl Project

Nick Tann's The Vinyl Project was released earlier this year. A solo singer/guitarist effort, Tann had originally conceived the album as a vinyl LP. Hence the relatively short total playing time also, which under the circumstances is completely understandable.

In keeping with this concept, the CD has the appearance of a vinyl record, and comes in an appropriate cardfold which is well designed. It certainly makes the CD so much more preferable to a digital download.

All eight songs are Tann originals and are thoroughly contemporary singer-songwriter material. They are intensive, often highly emotional and personal. Some of the lyrics may be a bit simplistic, with for instance simple rhymes, but over all I've heard a lot worse. Some are also of a slightly 'adult' nature that forty years ago might have been banned by the BBC.

Nick Tann's singing style and voice match this intensity and emotionality note for often painful note. Yes, there is a lot of pain in The Vinyl Project, intensely personal pain. But hey, who says life always is or even has to be happy? A bit of misery is part of what makes us alive, surely.

A consistent enough album, The Vinyl Project is somehow highly compelling. It is an album that commands being noticed and needs to be played repeatedly.

Watch out for Nick Tann. The Vinyl Project is a good solid album, and Tann sounds like he may go places!
