The Original Sound Of Cumbia

Released on Soundway Records on 5th December 2011, The Original Sound Of Cumbia is a Various Artists compilation that is truly exceptional. Subtitled The History Of Colombian Cumbia & Porro As Told By The Phonograph 1948-79,, it is a labour of love by Will ‘Quantic’ Holland (Quantic Soul Orchestra & Quantic y su Combo Barbaro), assisted by Miles Cletet, head of the label.

The Original Sound Of Cumbia is a historic compilation of Colombian cumbia and porro that is not only of immeasurable historic value, but puts this fabulous music right on your dance floor. Usually sadly and unjustly overlooked elsewhere in favour of Brazilian and Argentinean music, the cumbia and porro are popular to this day in Colombia, and keep moving on. Indeed, this amazing music has been so influential that it has even moved beyond the dance floor and has even drawn in British musicians, including violinist extraordinaire Lizzy Ball (Nigel Kennedy's Orchestra of Life, Eclectica!, The Lizzy Ball Band, etc.), who make up part of the Classico Latino ensemble who interpret it in a classical idiom to huge acclaim.

The cumbia originated among the Afro-Colombian population on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Indeed, it has much in common with other Caribbean forms of music. Once the music of the under classes, it rose to become the music of the nation. (Familiar story!) CD 1 of The Original Sound Of Cumbia presents the story of some of the earliest recorded cumbia, while CD 2 explores its development into a more modern form, up to 1979.

The recording quality is simply amazing, especially considering that much of the material on the first CD originated on 78s, and kudos has to go to the engineering team.

The Original Sound Of Cumbia is the ultimate compilation of historic cumbia and porro. It is just stunning and totally takes the breath away.

Thank you, Will ‘Quantic’ Holland for this mammoth effort, and thank you Soundway Records for bringing it to us.

Anyone with an interest in Afro-Latin, Latin American and Caribbean music simply has to get hold of The Original Sound Of Cumbia, it is more than a must have! It is also available as two sets of three vinyl LPs, if you prefer. Just get it!
