Spanning The Globe

The Music Pilgrim Trio's Spanning The Globe was released on 25th September. Another project that includes Seth Kibel, one of the finest and most amazingly versatile woodwind players on the Eastern Seaboard of the US, it further consists of superb guitarist and vocalist Vladimir Fridman and outstanding bassist Bob Abbot who also turns up in other Kibel projects. An altogether superb trio that can swing with the best.

The ambitious sounding title is almost accurate. The material covered is certainly very eclectic and international, ranging from Russian and Yiddish songs to klezmer, Latin, Swing and Broadway (with a Jewish twist in the form of a medley from Fiddler On The Roof), and taking in classical and jazz influences along the way, with some excellent improvisation. (The Yiddish songs include a superb cover of New York Yiddish theatre and film icon Molly Picon's signature tune, Abi Gezint, the opener.) Spanning The Globe's eleven tracks include one excellent original each by Fridman, Abbott and Kibel. The latter's contribution is an impressive piece recalling the Hot Club de France, Hot Club Time Machine.

Altogether, Spanning The Globe presents a fascinating potpourri of styles and material, delivered with great virtuosity, panache and imagination. If variety is the spice of life, Music Pilgrim Trio serve up a deliciously spicy dish with Spanning The Globe that is most enjoyable and, like all the best dishes, leaves you only wanting for more.

Beautifully consistent throughout, Spanning The Globe has a special kind of charm that makes the album more than merely compelling. Often foot-tapping, some of the grooves are outstanding, but there is appeal at all kinds of levels here. All in all, a beautiful album.

Music Pilgrim Trio's Spanning The Globe should have huge appeal to the general 'world music' aficionado, as well as to the Jewish music enthusiast, and may even appeal to jazz fans in part at least. Altogether, an album not to be missed out on!
