The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist

Maurizio Minardi's The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist - the title a pun on Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover - was released on 14th March on Belfagor Label. It is pianist and accordionist Minardi's ninth studio album.

The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist is almost as different from its predecessor, My Piano Trio, as chalk from cheese. The accordion almost totally dominates the former, while the latter is a piano trio album. Almost gone is the baroque jazz of the latter. Instead, The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist is cinematic, sometimes reminiscent of Ennio Morricone or Nino Rota in particular, with a strong Italianate feel and occasionally even one of the unforgettable maestro of popular Italian dance music and of course of the accordion, Gigi Stok. Classical influences are discernible, too. There is also an unshakable feeling of déjà vu about the current album. Sometimes generous touches of tango and rumba, as well as minimalist jazz complete the mixture. In total, the effect is fascinating, even stunning.

The line-up on The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist is similar to the previous album, with Maestro Minardi himself on accordion and piano, the almost ubiquitous, superb Nick Pini on double bass again showing what he is made of, and the excellent Jason Reeve again on drums, on six tracks, while on four tracks the superb new man on the traps Marco Quarantotto takes over. I would challenge anybody to tell the difference between the tracks that Reeve and Quarantotto play on, they seem that seamless. The excellent Shirley Smart guests on cello.

Like its predecessor, The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist is an album of rarefied, sophisticated beauty. Minardi's playing of the classical accordion is a beauty to behold in its own right.

To speak of consistency would be entirely superfluous here, and far beyond compelling, The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist has a mesmerising charm that will not let go. Minardi has come up with yet another outstanding, stunning and beautiful album. Resist it if you can or dare!

Maurizio Minardi's The Cook The Clown The Monk And The Accordionist is an absolute must have for any jazz aficionado, almost touching 'Third Stream' territory and hence of interest to the contemporary classical music lover too. I dare say it is also a must have for any connoisseur of the accordion as well. A dream of an album that you should beg, steal or borrow, but ideally buy!
