Mavrika

Mavrika's eponymous debut album was released on Psolista Records in November. The core of Katina Kangaris, vocals and Hammond organ, and Chris Morphitis, electric guitar, bass guitar, bouzouki and baglamas, is augmented by renowned Moroccan violinist and oud player Hassan Erraji, best known as a classical Arabic music exponent, and jazz drummer Tom Skinner, with the backing vocals of Pavlos Melas.

Together, they make for a formidable ensemble. The voice of Kangaris is outstanding and immediately captivating, its poised, classically trained delivery often contrasting with the angular, sharp electric guitar of Morphitis.

Mavrika is rembetika meets post-punk, meets prog-rock, rembetika brought into the twenty-first century. But all the same, rembetika at heart. Rembetika through and through. The material consists of some very fine selections of classics from the 1910s to the 1930s, the heyday of rembetika, plus a traditional Greek Cypriot wedding song.

This is a most remarkable album by any standards, and all the more so for being a most polished debut effort. Totally consistent throughout, Mavrika is not so much compelling as utterly irresistible. Full of charm, beauty and energy, this album cannot be praised highly enough. I have to confess that I cannot get enough of it!

Mavrika's self-titled debut album is one of the great must haves of the year. Regardless of whether you're already a hard-core rembetika connoisseur or a general 'world music' aficionado, Mavrika will have you completely spellbound. And there's no escape - you have been warned!
