Words Fail

Released on 4th February, Dominic J. Marshall's Digital EP Words Fail is the young jazz pianist's solo excursion into electronica. All instruments are played by Marshall himself. The vocals are not credited but seem to be mostly snippets of existing speeches.

The sixteen tracks are mostly very short, with the title track being the longest at just over three and a half minutes. However, they all seem to form a more or less continuous whole. For an EP, Words Fail is a generous thirty-one minutes, or almost a short album.

From someone with a jazz album like Icaros under his belt, Words Fail may seem like an odd 'excursion' to take. Nonetheless, this turns out to be a fascinating exploration of music and words through electronica. When you listen to the 'words' it quickly becomes obvious that words can indeed be inadequate, and the title Words Fail makes eminent sense, here and indeed all too often in the real world.

An experiment in electronica. Do not let these terms mislead you. Both experimental and electronica music can and have produced some very enjoyable music. Words Fail is no exception and is a very enjoyable listen. Yes, it is challenging, but it is also accessible and stimulating.

Consistent throughout, Words Fail is also extremely compelling. It is an album that easily holds interest repeatedly and that one wants to come back to repeatedly. It is as refreshing as it is fresh - a pleasant change.

If you like electronica or experimental music, or both, and music that is both enjoyable and stimulating, then Dominic J. Marshall's Words Fail is a must. But I would recommend it to anyone with broad musical horizons and an open mind who likes to be challenged a little now and then. As it is digital download only, it is also an absolute bargain, so what are you waiting for? I love this grand EP!
