Electric Affairs

Released as a digital release on Flocastro Records in April, Francesco Lo Castro's Electric Affairs is something of a side project, as the normally solidly acoustic guitarist explained. Here, Lo Castro makes an excursion into electronica, playing electric guitars as well as all other instruments himself, as well as being responsible for programming.

Lo Castro's acoustic jazz work is most impressive indeed, with his distinctive, Mediterranean/Italianate style. So what of Electric Affairs? I must confess that when I first heard this album weeks ago I was simply stunned and most impressed, as well as totally enamoured with Lo Castro's work here.

Has that impression lasted? Well, yes, absolutely! The often Santanaesque Latin-cum-Mediterranean style of Lo Castro's electric guitar is breath-taking, there is all the passion, skill and artistry of Santana himself, blended and enriched with Lo Castro's own, more relaxed, passion and Mediterranean 'cool' and more. Superb melodies and outstanding riffs abound from start to finish on this simply amazing album. Electric Affairs is an incredibly joyous affair that is enormously enjoyable, underpinned by solid grooves.

The world of electric guitar has just seen the birth of a new hero and phenomenon in Lo Castro with Electric Affairs. If this was a 'side project,' it certainly is one hell of a one and we ought to hear much more! This is the most phenomenal and interesting electric guitar album in a very long time. And Lo Castro's keyboard work is also impressive. Inspired as it is inspiring, fresh as it is refreshing, this album is brim-full of creativity and invention.

Consistent as one could wish for, Electric Affairs is also utterly mesmerising, rather than merely compelling. Brilliant and beautiful, this album is truly outstanding. One could easily listen all day long and never grow tired.

A firm favourite here already, Francesco Lo Castro's Electric Affairs is a must have for anybody who loves not just great guitar music, but good music, period. For the electric guitar aficionado, this is sheer heaven. What this album really needs though is a proper CD release, and the sooner the better.
