Jaakko Laitinen & Väärä Raha's Yö Rovaniemellä (A Night in Rovaniemi) was released early this year on the Finnish Helmi Levyt label.
A mix of Finnish tunes and Balkan grooves, this seems to be mainly aimed at the local dance scene. There are one, maybe two reasonably attractive numbers, but generally, Yö Rovaniemellä tends to quickly grind and it's hard to see how this album could have any large appeal on the general 'world music' scene - more pop than 'world music' at that. A highly alcohol-infused dance, perhaps. But I personally would have to be drunk to the point of passing out if not beyond, sorry.
This may help explain the lack of availability of this album from non-Finnish sources.
I shan't regret not ever hearing Jaakko Laitinen & Väärä Raha's Yö Rovaniemellä again. If it's Balkan beat you're after, go for the genuine article, not this pale Finnish-inflected imitation.
