And Now I Know...

The Paul Jordanous Ensemble's And Now I Know... was released a few short weeks ago last December and is Jordanous' debut album as leader. His recording and performing credits as a sideman are numerous and impressive. It should therefore come as little surprise that this is a very polished release.

It is a delight to come across a trumpet/flugel-led album for a change. Somehow, this species sadly doesn't seem to come along all that often these days. And Jordanous is a formidable player with prodigious chops. The ensemble he has assembled here is remarkable too and includes rising young keyboard stars Kit Downes and Bill Mudge. Also particularly noteworthy are Paul Booth on tenor, Tom White on 'bone, and Lewis Wright on vibes. The ensemble playing is just superb, with excellent soloing - some quite breath-taking improvs all round, in fact. Jordanous leads prominently from the front and is most impressive all round, but also leaves generous room for his co-conspirators to shine.

All eight tracks on And Now I Know... are Jordanous originals, and they are simply superb. There is always plenty of space for improvs, and there are delightfully many of these.

The music is a delight. And Now I Know... is just captivating and gorgeous, with its often richly layered textures and its colourful soundscapes and beautiful melodies and interesting harmonies. Inventive and imaginative, there is a certain charm here whose spell it would be difficult to not fall under. Above all, perhaps, this is fine contemporary jazz that frequently harkens back to the roots and always remains just good, rock-solid jazz. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

As a boon, we yet again see the quirky, wonderfully as-if-alive artwork of Alban Low on and inside the sleeves of the otherwise delightfully simple digipak double gatefold. Beware - the band might just come alive through Low's artwork!

This album is as consistent as the day is long. Beyond compelling, And Now I Know... is just spellbinding and is an album you'll not only want to listen to repeatedly but come back to again. And again. The Paul Jordanous Ensemble's And Now I Know... surely has to be essential listening for any true jazz aficionado!
