Big Bang

Horizen's Big Bang, their debut studio album, was released in October 2012. The title seems apt. Not by any means on account of a great big noise, but rather in that the band certainly announce their arrival in a big bang kind of way!

Horizen are a quartet, comprised of Tom Williams, guitar; Mike Haines, drums; Manley O'Connor, keyboards; and Nathan Bossoh, bass. On three of Big Bang's six tracks they are augmented by the superb Duncan Eagles on sax. All tracks are excellent originals.

This is a great little band, and I would be very surprised if Horizen did not go places. Their brand of fusion leans heavily towards prog rock, though difficult to bind to any particular 'genre,' but their improvs are solidly grounded in jazz while still giving their imagination and intuition a great deal of freedom. Horizen's sound is as fresh as it is refreshing and may take the listener by surprise. Intricate rhythms are married to fresh sounding harmonies and superb melodies.

Although immediately appealing, Big Bang is the kind of album that keeps growing on you the more you listen to it. Duncan Eagles is sensitive to the band and blends in supremely.

Beautifully consistent throughout, indeed, remarkably so for a debut, Big Bang is a most compelling album that is a joy to listen to. Repeatedly! It is also proof that prog rock oriented fusion still attracts new followers among younger musicians, which is a delight in itself.

Presently only available as digital download, Horizen's Big Bang should be a delight to all aficionados of fusion, broadly. It is a polished album worthy of release as CD, preferably in a nice simple cardfold, and personally I would hope for this.
