Sketches Of Imaginary Landscapes

Kobi Arad Band's Sketches Of Imaginary Landscapes was released on the Greenpath Musical Productions label in December 2010.

The band consists of New York based Kobi Arad on keys and piano, drummer Ray 'Mr. Fantastik' McNaught, and bassist Tucker Yaro. Three of the bonus tracks feature Arad in a piano and cello duo with Yonatan Niv. The band are extremely tight, and the ensemble playing and soloing are exquisite.

Arad, an old friend and former band mate of leading drummer Asaf Sirkis, like the latter is a deeply spiritual and very deep musician. It should therefore hardly come as a big surprise that there is a deep-rooted similarity in Arad's and Sirkis' music, the same deep-seated spirituality, the same emphasis on intuitiveness and inspiration over mere ideas, and a mind-boggling degree of innovation and invention. But where Sirkis takes much of his inspiration from classic prog-rock and Carnatic music these days, Arad seems to take his heavily from the classic jazz piano trio and classical music. Indeed, it is not putting the case too strongly to call Sketches Of Imaginary Landscapes just about the most perfect example of the 'Third Stream.'

If Arad's piano and keyboard work amazes, the spirituality of his compositions and improvs get right inside one, through and through. But there is much more to Sketches Of Imaginary Landscapes still. It is also an outstanding album, period, and its sheer beauty and elegance are magical, even mystical.

Even to mention consistency here is utterly redundant. As for compelling, well no, it is not, it is far more, it is simply mesmerising, and one just cannot get enough of Sketches Of Imaginary Landscapes. Brilliant, beautiful, elegant, exquisite, inspired as well as inspiring, this is one of those albums that just about has it all. It is just awesome and awe inspiring. And totally exhilarating.

Kobi Arad Band's Sketches Of Imaginary Landscapes is a must have, especially for any connoisseur of fusion, Third Stream, even contemporary classical music. And anyone else who has an ear for good music will enjoy this, too.
