Inner Hymns - Creative Exploration Of Traditional Jewish Hymns
Kobi Arad Band's Inner Hymns - Creative Exploration Of Traditional Jewish Hymns was released on Greenpath Musical Productions on 21st August 2012.
Another all too rare release by the maestro of contemporary 'Third Stream,' Kobi Arad, this takes as its broad theme the exploration of traditional Jewish hymns. Four of the thirteen tracks are Arad originals, and a fifth is re-composed by Arad, while the rest are either traditional, or by other composers. Deeply spiritually based, like Arad's previous material, the originals and other material are a perfect match here. Arad's music may be 'Third Stream,' but it is also, and primarily, spiritual music, firmly rooted in the kabalah tradition.
Arad and his band, as is to be expected, put on a world-class performance on Inner Hymns, as usual. The addition of special guest Oran Etkin on clarinet and bass clarinet on Seven Seventy and Field's Harvest fits the band, and the music, seamlessly.
Inner Hymns is that perfect blend of solid contemporary jazz and brilliant contemporary classical music. At the same time, it is both musically and spiritually of an often high energy intensity. In the best kabalistic tradition, Inner Hymns aims to elevate the listener to higher mystical states of consciousness. In principal, this is broadly comparable to the aims of Sufi music, which is perhaps better known.
Yes, this is a world class recording of enjoyable, beautiful music by world class musicians. But Inner Hymns is also much more than that. It is music that is spiritually very uplifting, and Arad's own spirituality carries through.
It is needless to point out that the album is totally consistent, beginning to end. Inner Hymns is moreover utterly mesmerising rather than merely compelling, and is a beautiful, brilliant album on a vast spiritual scale. Be adventurous if nothing else and take a journey of the mind.
Kobi Arad Band's Inner Hymns should appeal to aficionados of both contemporary classical music and contemporary jazz equally, and as such it is something of a rare beast. A must have!
