Aleph Trio (EP)

The Aleph Trio's eponymous EP was released on 6th February. At just under twenty-eight minutes and five tracks, it is very generous for an EP and almost matches the length of some full albums.

Comprising guitarist Ben McDonnell, bassist Ben Bastin and drummer Chris Packham, the Aleph Trio boasts an impressive line-up of individually excellent musicians who collectively are something considerably greater than the sum of their parts, as they amply demonstrate here. Although nominally an EP, Aleph Trio is every bit as satisfying as an album. And impressive at that. McDonnell's five originals are impressive compositions that give the trio ample space to improvise as well as come together as a collective. The emphasis in these compositions is on melody, although harmony and rhythm are far from wanting.

There are no pyrotechnics for their own sake on Aleph Trio from any of the players (but by no means is there a shortage of virtuosity!), the music is laid back - one might be tempted to call it 'horizontalist' - and relaxing, fresh and refreshing. Every note has its proper place and makes sense, as does every pause. Expressive as well as inspired and inventive, this melodious, thoughtful music is also perfect to chill by.

Consistency is writ large here, and Aleph Trio is more than compelling. For an EP, it is truly inspired! A most enjoyable listen that one will not get bored of and indeed cannot but want to repeat.

The Aleph Trio's self-titled EP is available in digital formats, as well as as a limited edition CD. The latter comes in a plain but well-designed simple card sleeve - beautiful, no dreadful jewel case, definitely preferable to the download. What are you waiting for?
