AWiL Lives On At SOAS Radio!
DJ Ritu's A World in London now lives at SOAS Radio, London! Episode 1 of the still evolving new format went out on Tuesday, 12th July, and the show is broadcast every Tuesday - live since Episode 3 (26th July) - at 4pm! Not only is AWiL live, it's also archived on SOAS Radio, and - wait for it! - it's also available as a podcast on iTunes! So there's no excuse at all for missing a show!
Moreover, if those choices aren't enough for you, podcasts are also available on Radio Groovalizacion and the show will also continue as Cloudcasts on Mixcloud (though possibly with some delay). So you really can't miss DJ Ritu's A World in London, wherever you are on this little planet! What's more, you shouldn't miss this fabulous show!
And don't forget, DJ Ritu will also be bringing back fabulous studio guests, competitions with fabulous prizes, and so much more!
If you're not yet familiar with this show and DJ Ritu, A World in London has always been and still is the best world music show to have graced British airwaves until it was dropped by BBC London, with the last show there having gone out on 1st January this year. Since 12th July AWiL lives at SOAS Radio! Anything from world beat to folk - oh yes, no fear of the f-word here! - to world jazz, DJ Ritu has it all and then some!
The first AWiL at SOAS Radio from 12th July is now also available as a cloudcast from Mixcloud, and is also embedded here at right for your convenience! A playlist is also provided at right.
DJ Ritu’s inaugural A World in London show for SOAS Radio begins somewhere in Egypt, heads to Armenia and Peru, and then makes a swift journey off to West & North Africa via Japan and India! All the musical flavours of the globe are savoured in this first A World In London at Soas Radio, with some choice tracks by stars like Taraf De Haidouks, Susana Baca, Dub Colossus, and Orchestre Poly-Rythmo!
You can also check out AWiL via DJ Ritu's web site, which you should also visit for world music charts, gig guides, the latest 'Hot Tracks' and so much more!
The last pre-SOAS Radio AWiL of 8th July is now also available from Radio Groovalizacion podcasts!

About The Campaigns
This being the height of summer, you would not really expect too much to be happening in the campaigns.
However, the respective heads of the A World in London and the Folkwaves campaigns are not idle, with the latter especially bullish about getting ready for a further onslaught against the 'death, dumb and blind, ' powers that be in the BBC. so be prepared.
Regrettably, I still haven't been able to catch up with the 'replacement' shows for Folkwaves et al on BBC East Midlands and for A World in London on BBC London to see, or rather hear, how they fare now after all these months. Although, take the 'regrettably' with a very large pinch of salt - I'm no masochist!
Other Shows To Please Our Ears...
Roger Williams is the co-presenter of new show A World Of Difference on internet only station Trent Sound. It's on Monday nights from 7-10. It has a wider remit than Folkwaves and is in its very early stages but there will be a commitment to local music. In this respect it will only be as good as the intelligence the programme gets. It's closer to John Shaw's Here Be Dragons than Folkwaves but Folkwaves listeners should find some solace! At the moment, it's available live only, though it's hoped some sort of 'play again' facility will be available soon.
And I have at last managed to catch up with the lovely Elizabeth Padgett's Folk show on Tulip Radio 107.5 FM! Great to hear you again Elizabeth, and what a fab-u-lous show too! At present, it's also only available live on the web, or of course on FM in the Spalding, Lincs. area. Folk is on on alternate Tuesdays, the next two being due on 16th and 30th August. Great show, great music, great presenter! Don't miss!

Please join the fight and help save all these excellent shows and BBC Local Radio itself! Remember, it's your BBC! Make sure the Beeb knows it!
To survive long term, BBC Local Radio needs high quality, popular shows like DJ Ritu's A World in London, Mick Peat and Lester Simpson's Folkwaves, and others. It needs diversity of programming. It needs to differentiate itself from all the undifferentiated pap that (for the most part) is commercial local radio, not emulate it as seems to be the current trend.
Most importantly of all, the BBC needs to be made aware of what its listeners really want (rather than what the BBC thinks its listeners should want!), and they need to be made aware that they have to listen to what people want. Let the BBC know what you want!
