DJ Ritu and A World in London

Broadcaster DJ Ritu inherited the late Charlie Gillett's The Sound Of The City Saturday evening slot on BBC London 94.9 after the latter became to ill to continue with the show in 2005. Ritu, an experienced broadcaster who at present has also been presenting a popular and internationally syndicated Asian music programme on BBC Three Counties Radio for some twenty years, re-launched the show as A World in London, to more accurately reflect her changed format which focused strongly on the music of London's many diverse communities with a mixture of music and chat, especially through studio guest musicians from the many-faceted multi-ethnic communities that make up London as well as international stars, and a mixture of world music as broad as that term implies. From world beat to more serious world music, world fusion, world jazz, and even folk and more, Ritu's A World in London is and always has been all-inclusive.

The show became one of BBC London's most popular programmes, with a huge audience for local radio, and a vast international following online. Sadly, BBC London 94.9 terminated this, the best world music show to have graced British airwaves yet, with the last show on BBC London 94.9 going out on 1st January 2011, in spite of the many protests from loyal fans who even mounted a campaign.

Nevertheless, Ritu, not only an experienced but also dedicated broadcaster, continued A World in London through podcasts to keep the shows dedicated audience happy, until the show found a new home on SOAS Radio starting 12th July 2011. Currently, AWiL - as the show is also known to its loyal followers - goes out live every Wednesday at 3pm and is also available for play again/podcast on SOAS Radio and as a podcast on iTunes from Thursday or Friday onwards.

Here, we present the complete playlists and play again links for all past shows on SOAS Radio.

In this fifth part, we cover A World in London Episodes 41-50.

A World in London Ep. 41 (25th April 2012)

Songwriter Terryazoome and musician Angelos Georgakis joined Ritu on this A World In London. Terry’s extensive and varied career as a guitarist and composer began in the 1970’s with bands like Sister Strutt, and the challenging & pioneering women’s collective Jam Today. Her Smyrnian roots and mother’s love for traditional Greek music re-surfaced in the 90’s when she mastered the bouzouki. With a short detour into academia and astrophysics, Terryazoome is now back in the world of music drawing together her vast array of musical influences from Africa, Europe & Latin America. Hear extracts from her unique new album, ‘Xana’ on this show and see her live on May 24th at The Grey Horse in Kingston!

A World in London Ep.  44 (16th May 2012)

Two major talents in the form of Sarah Gillespie and Gilad Atzmon came together on this A World In London. Sarah’s powerful lyrics and contagious ironic humour are delivered through her pristine & glorious jazz voice. Partnered by iconic composer Gilad Atzmon, a dash of Arabic strings, lashings of rock guitar, and oodles of eclecticism are added to her beat poetry in albums like ‘Stalking Juliet’ and ‘In The Current Climate’. While Gillespie’s acclaimed narrative, ‘War On Trevor’, recently showcased at Ronnie Scott’s, marks her out surely as the natural successor to Ian Dury!
