DJ Ritu and A World in London

Broadcaster DJ Ritu inherited the late Charlie Gillett's The Sound Of The City Saturday evening slot on BBC London 94.9 when the latter became to ill to continue with the show in 2005. Ritu re-named the show A World in London, to more accurately reflect her changed format which focused strongly on the music of London's many diverse communities with a mixture of music and chat, especially through studio guest musicians from the many-faceted multi-ethnic communities that make up London as well as international stars, and a mixture of world music as broad as that term implies. From world beat to more serious world music, world fusion, world jazz, and even folk and more, Ritu's A World in London is and always has been all-inclusive.

The show became one of BBC London's most popular programmes, with a huge audience for local radio, and a vast international following online. Sadly, BBC London 94.9 terminated this, the best world music show to have graced British airwaves yet, with the last show BBC London 94.9 going out on 1st January 2011, despite of the many protests from loyal fans who even mounted a campaign.

Nevertheless, Ritu, an experienced broadcaster, continued A World in London through podcasts, until the show found a new home on SOAS Radio starting 12th July 2011. Currently, AWiL - as the show is also known to its loyal followers - goes out live every Wednesday at 3pm and is also available for play again on SOAS Radio and as a podcast on iTunes from the following day onwards.

Here, we present the complete playlists and play again links for all past shows on SOAS Radio.

In this first part, we cover A World in London Episodes 1-10.

A World in London Ep. 10 (13th September 2011)

Prime ambassador for Egyptian rhythms and scales is percussion maestro, Hossam Ramzy. Ritu was thrilled to meet him two years ago at A World In London after having carried him around in her record box for over 10 years...or rather..his CDs! In this follow-up session, Hossam returns to AWIL and gives his perspective on the new ‘Spring’ in Egypt. Accompanied by Brit-Greek Cypriot producer & composer Chaz Kkoshi (check out some of his creations on The Inbetweeners soundtrack) Hossam reflects upon working with greats like Khaled, Robert Plant, & Shakira, and how he assembled an all-star cast for his latest album: ‘ Rock The Tabla’, featuring A.R. Rahman, Billy Cobham, Omar Farul Tekbilek, Jimmy Waldo, and more, is out now on the A.R.C. label.
