Rainlore's World of Music will become simply Rainlore's World in the New Year, with a subtext of '- Music, Arts & Letters.' This is in order to reflect the much broader spectrum the site has come to include over the years. Over the next year or two, a thorough revamp of the site is hoped to be carried out to take this into account and to simplify the site and make it more user-friendly too. For the time being, the domain will remain the same. Comments and suggestions always welcome.

Alban Low, currently artist-in-residence at Twickfolk, Twickenham, will be having an exhibition, Art of Folk, from 6pm on Sunday 27th January 2013 at Twickfolk, The Cabbage Patch, 67 London Rd., Twickenham TW1 3SZ. Admission is free, and music is provided by Alan Franks from 7pm to put you even more in the mood! An event not to be missed! Low is renowned for his illustrations of gigs (inc. some he has already kindly done for this site!), album artwork as well as animations, including commissions for the BBC. In the meantime, you can find out more about his amazing work and download a catalogue of posters and prints at Alban Low's web site.

Happy New Year! And a glorious Panorama season!

After some delay due to 'man flu,' which also, to my greatest regret, caused me to miss out on two fabulous gigs, including the UK 2012 Panorama Finals, here we are again! Only one review of peripheral interest in this category due to aforementioned 'man flu,' a superlative gig, and a special feature to make up for the missed Panorama.

A gig to take your breath away barely begins to describe the UK 2012 Calypso Monarch Finals, The Tabernacle, Powis Square, London W11, Thursday 23rd August 2012. It turned out an amazing extravaganza, superbly staged by The British Association of Calypsonians. Sadly, no pan was used this year, although used in some of the recordings of this year's crop of kaisos. The standard was incredibly high, both of the contestants for this year's crown as well as the amazing additional entertainment. 'Lorraine don't cry I leaving, I can't miss this jamming...' should instantly tell every soca fan the highlight of the evening's entertainment! (And no doubt moisten a few Trini expats' eyes.) But read the review...

Having had to miss London Panorama, at least a special feature was in order, UK 2012 Panorama Finals, Elsmsie Horniman's Pleasance Park, Kensal Road, London W10, Saturday 25th August 2012 - Results & Commentary. Full results, plus I had to add my own 2 quid's worth...

This time, a review of one fabulous album broadly in this category. It's the London calypso season, and the UK Calypso Monarch Finals and the Notting Hill Carnival are almost upon us! Trinidad it isn't, but this calypsonian certainly could be straight out of the T&T scene! Hence, we have reigning UK Calypso Monarch of two years' running Alexander D. Great's The Night Watchman, which of course includes the title with which he will be defending his crown and which also happens to be the sample track, the glorious Fifty Years (Living Independently). How could he possibly lose with that! De great Alexander for Monarch! Oh, and the album - fan-tab-u-lous, buy it! With lots of pan interest, too.

Please note that the 2011 part of this page has now been archived.

Also, in order to reduce the number of constantly repeating links, those referring to pages or local page items that can easily be found in the navigation bar at the top of each page will in future be omitted. This will affect references to, e.g., 'reviews.'

It's that time of year again, tomorrow sees National Panorama Finals at 'de big yard' in Port of Spain, and no time for any coverage here yet, alas. An' ah still bawlin like ten hundred Tarzans - Panorama without Despers, nah, dat just ehn right, dat is like takin de curry out of de curry goat! Somehow, ah eh craving meh pelau an' de big yard so much dis year.

Still, all the best to all the other bands!

Meanwhile, we are also catching up with some long overdue reviews. Of special interest here is a fascinating, charming demo in the form of Épocanova's Live Demo, a unique combo with a unique sound that we should hear a lot more of soon! With a superb double frontline of one of the UK's finest and most versatile saxophonists, Roberto Manzin, and outstanding steel pan exponent Susannah Flack, the rest of the quintet are equally illustrious and should be well known here. A new and exciting sound that arises out of the music of the Caribbean and South America! A thoroughly international line-up this is, too - for example, Ms. Flack is English of part Brazilian origin, Manzin originally hails from Italy, Rey Crespo (Rubén González, Omara Portuondo) from Cuba, and so on! And Susannah Flack is one ace pannist, at that. At the tender age of 22, she became captain and manager of one of Britain's finest and most dynamic steel bands, Glissando! She is one of the few UK pannists who could truly hold her own in T&T.

Hopefully, we'll do a little more 'catching up' next week!

Reviews

Reviews are one of the major features of this site. Generally, reviews feature CD albums, but they will by no means be limited to CD releases. Previews and live performances, and even the odd demo, will also be covered as and when opportunities present themselves. Also, reviews are not necessarily of the latest releases only, rather, I aim to generally cover the best of what's around and that will often include reviews of older releases. Also, there is an index listing all CD reviews available on Rainlore's World of Music, which includes reviews of music from other genres, for example Jewish music, world music, classical, in fact just about anything, and another one listing all live music reviews.
